We celebrate the 1-year anniversary of Walk2gether

Today, June 6, marks the first anniversary that Walk2gether ended in Valparaiso, Chile!

For those of you who are new to our CFCA community, Walk2gether was a nearly 8,000-mile journey by CFCA President Bob Hentzen and the grupo corazÛn (core group) through 12 Latin American countries, starting in Guatemala and ending in Chile.

Walk2gether began Dec. 29, 2009, and ended June 6, 2011.

We are grateful for the safety and well-being of the walkers, thanks to the talents, planning and participation of CFCA staff members and families. (Here you can read about the number of solidarity walks that took place with Walk2gether around the CFCA world.)

We also keep in mind that today marks the funeral celebration of Msgr. Greg Schaffer, a longtime CFCA board member and friend, in San Lucas Toliman, Guatemala.

“We express our gratitude for the gift that Fr. Greg has been and will continue to be for CFCA and for all his San Lucas family,” said Paco Wertin, the CEO of CFCA. “In particular we are grateful for the friendship that Bob and Fr. Greg shared across the years and across the miles, helping to guide CFCA into the way of peace.”

During Walk2gether, Bob expressed on CFCA’s behalf our solidarity with families living in poverty. We honor their sacrifices, support their struggles and partner with them on their path to a better future.

Bob and the walk team never felt alone because of your prayers and support. We cannot thank you enough for journeying with us.

We found sponsors for more than 8,000 kids!

We did it!!

More than 8,000 children have been sponsored through the “8,000 miles for 8,000 kids” effort inspired by Walk2gether, the 8,000-mile solidarity walk through Latin America led by CFCA President and Co-founder Bob Hentzen.

We cannot thank everyone enough for all the help we received in making this possible. This was a labor of love for so many people, and we deeply appreciate your support.

As Bob says, “For each of you who walked with us in fact or in prayer, this continues to be an exciting and humbling journey into the lives of our sponsored friends, their families and our CFCA colleagues.”

Update on our ’8,000 miles for 8,000 kids’ campaign

The physical journey of Walk2gether, a nearly 8,000-mile walk by CFCA President Bob Hentzen and others, has ended.

But our campaign to find sponsors for 8,000 kids continues!

We cannot thank you enough for taking this journey with us. As of Aug. 26, our records show that 2,781 children have been sponsored through this campaign.

We’re confident that by the end of this year, we’ll have succeeded in sponsoring many more.

Behind every sponsorship is a person telling someone else about CFCA ñ whether it’s through word of mouth, online communications or social media.

So thanks for all your help! We deeply appreciate your support.

P.S. So far more than $80 has also been raised for CFCA scholarships through our related #8000kids campaign on Twitter. That’s great news!

CFCA sponsor donates $8,000 for 8,000-mile walk

Richard Ryder, a longtime CFCA sponsor, sent us this beautiful letter and an $8,000 donation ñ $1 for every mile of Walk2gether, which CFCA President Bob Hentzen finished on June 6. Richard graciously gave us permission to share his letter with you, our CFCA community.

I meant to send this check when Bob finished his 8,000-mile “miracle” walk, but time got away from me.

I first met Bob on my mission awareness trip to Costa Rica in November 2009 to visit my sponsored “young man,” Jesus.

Bob was instrumental in helping me add Jesus’ sister, Kimberline, to my sponsorship, and I’m forever grateful.

When traveling with Bob on our mission trip, I realized I was in the presence of a modern-day St. Francis, only his name was Roberto.

It was then that I told Bob I wanted to sponsor his walk for $1 per mile. I have kept Bob, Cristina and family in my daily prayers.

Please pass on my prayers and thoughts to Bob.

Chilean mothers reflect on Walk2gether finale

Walk2gether, the nearly 8,000-mile journey undertaken by CFCA President Bob Hentzen, is over, but the spirit of the walk lives on. Recently the mothers in Chile who organized the finale and decorated Pratt Stadium gathered to reflect on the walk’s culmination. CFCA-Chile staff member Carolina Salazar Herrera sent us this report from Valparaiso.

Bob Hentzen and thousands of CFCA sponsored members and their families celebrate the end of Walk2gether in Valparaiso, Chile, on June 6, 2011.

The pilgrimage, an act of Christian love to those most in need, represented the unity between the different projects of Latin America.

Don Roberto (Bob) once more demonstrated with this walk that he loves the poor and is an example of hope, of a life of prayer, sacrifice and faith.

The Valparaiso project had an activity in honor of the mothers who supported us on the walk.

They helped us organize and decorate the place where Bob finished this immense work of love, passing on a message of hope, love and dignity to those most in need.

Many mothers offered their impressions on the celebrations:

1) Olga: “I can’t tell you how much seeing Don Roberto affected me. It gave me [a lump] in my chest and made me cry. Every day when I pray, I remember him and I ask God to give him vitality and health so he can continue this beautiful movement with everyone who helps him.”

2) Marcia: “When I saw Don Roberto arriving, I was grateful and content. I never thought I would see this. I told him that thanks to him, his family and the foundation, my children can continue their studies. I have so much to tell him, but at that moment, the words did not come.”
