Hi Caty,

Thanks for your question. At this time, we do not have the resources to send eLetters (including processing and translation) from sponsored friends to their sponsors.

All correspondence from sponsored friends should be sent to their sponsors through the local project. There they will be translated, if necessary, logged and sent to the Kansas office for distribution to sponsors.

Our CFCA policy requires that letter writing must be the method by which all communications between sponsors and sponsored friends take place. This is to protect the privacy of our sponsors and our sponsored friends and make sure all communications are appropriate.

Hope this helps! Thanks, and God bless.

We have been sponsoring a young girl (now young lady) since 2004, and it is as rewarding as raising our own children. We have always donated to charities and childrens' causes, but the awesome opprtunity to help someone live, get educated, and grow up to follow a dream is sheer joy!! The great pleasure for us is corresonding with her. The whole family loves to write, make her pictures, add anecdotes about their experiences, and we love her responses as she shares her life and thoughts with us. She especially loves to correspond with our oldest daughter, as they are nearly the same age, and are making choices about college, career. We see her genuine enthusiasm and loving nature, and are so grateful to have her in our lives. Wow!! That was too long, but this is what happens when I get started telling people about CFCA.

Louise,

Thanks for your interest in writing to your sponsored child!

We don't allow direct contact via email, but as a convenience for our sponsors, we offer the option of writing an online eLetter to their sponsored friends. The eLetters are not emails. They are simply an easy way for sponsors to write a letter that we'll deliver on their behalf. Sponsors must log in to their account to access the eLetter option on the 'My sponsorships' page.

Here's a quick link (you'll need to be registered and logged in to your online account to use it): https://www.cfcausa.org/CFCA/SponsorsOnline/ELettersCreate.aspx

Laura,
This is a beautiful story. You were so descriptive I felt like I was on that trip with you. It brought back memories of my trip to Kenya in 2008
It looks like we have 2 things in common: CFCA and HFH.
I sponsor a beautiful 15 year old girl in Kenya and was fortunate to be able to visit her during a MAT. At the end of the trip I visited the Habitat for Humanity headquarters in Nairobi. I am very involved with HFH here at home and would love to participate in a Global Village trip.
Are you planning a trip to the Philippines to visit your other sponsored child? Like you I had difficulty justifying the expense. I thought that the money could be put to better use by donating it, but once I had that face-to face meeting it changed my point of view. I have also visited my other child in Bolivia and it was an experience I will never forget. Thanks to CFCA for bringing us together.
God Bless you.

I really enjoyed watching the videos of the children interacting with their sponsors. Really gives an idea of what the children do for fun. We play some of the same games here in the US. I have not been able to visit my little girl yet, but I hope in the future I can. I can't wait until I get another letter from her. She always draws me a picture. Love that!!!

I have been a sponsor since 1999,when CFCA came to my church. They had a small table at the back with all these big white folders on them. Many people just walked right by ,but I am not one to be rude, and will listen to what they had to say. I do not know what they said,as I was looking at all of the beautiful pictures on the front of the folders. My eye came to rest on the face of a small girl ,just 7years old, with the biggest brown eyes, in the prettiest red dress with a white collar, Kelly Vanesa, what a nice name! My thought was she was calling me to help,at the time it was 20.00 a month, and I thought, that was less than 1.00 a day! I knew I wasted more than a dollar a day and did not even think about it,I knew I could do it,if I just thought about what I was doing, SO I DID,and she was instantly a part of my family. It became a real challange to find cool little things I could send her, stickers, postcards, bookmarks, photos of my animals and even the trees and flowers here in Michigan. The change in seasons, everything became more appreciated here where I live because I was showing it to someone who may never get here, but could dream of someday getting here to see,but could share it with her family and school mates. The photos showed her growing and maturing into a beautiful young women and i was able to sponsor her until 15years old, when she had to move out of the area,it was difficult, but I knew she had a good start and I will remember her always,BUT I WAS HOOKED I was asked to use my sponsor another,so I asked for a young women in the same project,MEET ERNESTINA,and another Maria Camila-so I have 2 wonderful young ladies,1 older,so I could encourage her to continue to college, and 1 just starting school who was struggling to get through 1 class at a time--great for me,so I could look for thigs to send for their schools, photos, birds, flowers, everything was so exciting to share. When Ernestina no longer was in the program,I asked for the next person who needed help-enter Naresh-a young man from India-wonderful someone from the other side of the world--He has the most happy face, and very proud looking in his photo. -THEN I got a call from CFCA to hlpe at a church by me for a sponsorship weekend,in the fall of 2011. I was very excited and very nervous, but I was only hlpeing the CFCA priest right? I helped at all 4 masses that weekend,as I took all the folders out I read each one, thinking if I knew each one I may be able to help someone who wanted a certain age, country, birthday or what ever may call them, there were so many folders.......some were medically compromised,I thought I MUST HELP THEM GET SPONSORED,so I out them all on top,I brought all my photos of my kids, and told my story of the joy and how little it really cost to do this,if we would examine the daily spending we do,it was something we all can do..There was 6 elderly as well, and they also went on top-I just thought of my grandmother, who I miss dearly, and I could not let them not get sponsored either, could I? WELL people were wonderful, and if you do not know MICHIGAN ,the economic hard times hit us long before it hit the rest of the country.....people were taking folders because they wanted a boy from here or a girl from there, and this is my birthday,so I must take this one,and my husband is a doctor,so we must take this medically compromised child and help, and another lady told me she is getting rid of her cable to sponsor this child, IT WAS AWESOME!!!! When the weekend was done I only had only 6 folders to put away,we had 49 successful sponsorships, and as I put them away, there was 1 last elderly manEdward from Madagascar-with the saddest eyes, and i could not put him away-so I have a 3rd person to sponsor, and could not be happier!-for about 3.00 a day,I can make the lives of 3 families a bit better, and the letters and pictures are something I will keep forever. I am sorry this is so long, but there is not enough to say about the return on your investment with CFCA sponsorship!!!!

Since that time, I have been a sponsor of my other "little girl." Presently, I still have the Christmas Card that she made up in our living room. My sponsored "little girl" family has similar birthdays to my family. The letters from them giving me thanks has made me more appreciative to God for HIS blessings to us.

Our family has sponsored for 12 years through CFCA. Gerald grew up with our four children, and he will be graduating soon. We pray he will continue with his education. Our church has sponsored an amazing 89 year old woman from El Salvador for 5 years, whom I've met three times. This past November, ten people from our church visited her and her family. We had a big birthday party for her. Thank you, CFCA !

I began my journey with CFCA while I was in college. My parents sponsored a young child, and encouraged me to do the same. Being that I was a broke college student, $30 seemed a lot at the time. However, I realized that what $30 did to me was not nearly what it could do for someone in poverty. I resolved to do whatever it took to always have at least $30 in my bank account for sponsorship. Since then, I cannot even begin to describe the amazing feeling of sponsorship. The small sacrifice I made, made a world of a difference to my sponsor friend from the Philippines. She told me I helped her graduate college. Not just by the monetary help, but by knowing that a complete stranger from the U.S. was rooting for her to finish. She now is proud to tell me she has a full-time job and can help support her family.
When my sponsor friend no longer needed support, I decided to sponsor 2 more children. I have one boy in Honduras and one girl in Chile. I am planning on attending one of CFCA's mission trips to Honduras to meet him. I am so excited to see in person the incredible things the foundation does for mankind.
Being a sponsor is the most rewarding and joyful experience. I would recommend this to anyone who is looking to make a difference in the lives of others.

We have been a sponsor for several years. We have enjoyed as a Knights of Columbus Council watching our young man grow up to become a young adult. We have enjoyed hearing about his family, his education and his Faith. We enjoy learning about him and how he is excelling in school. All the Brother Knights of our Council enjoy hearing our young man's letters read everytime he write's us. After reading the letter to the council, it is placed on our bulletin board so all in the Parish can share in his life and love for his Family and his Faith. When I see the envelope in the mail from him, it brightens my day. We look forward to continuing to keep our young man in our Prayers and our thoughts.

This has been a learning process for our family. I should say that we DO send a package, but we are careful to stay within the rules. When my daughter met our sponsored child in July, there was conversation about the child wanting a doll. We weren't really "up" enough on the rules and said we would try. I am sure her social workers have explained that we can't send one (although we did send a teeny tiny one that fit in the 9 x 12 1" envelope!), but I still appreciate CFCA's efforts to educate us sponsors about the best ways to share our affection with our sponsored friends, and the characteristics of postal services in other countries that may complicate things a lot. The special funds are always good and always of benefit to the families.

The last year has been an amazing journey for me. Last Nov. I started RCIA classes because of the faith of one special little boy I'd taken guardianship of. April I was Baptized and Conf. by June I was a Eucharist Minister :). This Christmas Eve. that 7 yr old boy and I went on to buy a set of Chickens, pigs, bibles and water filter for Asia. Then decided we would sponsor a child. He was the 4th picture I saw and loved baseball and thought he may want to be a pastor, he had a lot in common with my boy, then I looked at his name and his 1st name is my boys last name! I told my husband it was fate and we sponsored him that night. On New Years Eve we decided to sponsor another child from here. We are excited to help their family, their children, to learn of their culture and to even visit (this is the ONLY sponsorship program I found that made this reasonably possible). I hope my boy will grow up knowing them both. We are suppose to be gods feet and hands and this is our way of doing so. For anyone considering it I urge you to pick a child. For as little as a cup of coffee a day WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Thank you for your comment, Lisa. Part of the sponsorship program is about building a relationship between the sponsor and the sponsored friend, and this includes learning about each other and your respective cultures. For many people, religion is a large part of who they are and what their culture is like.

You are certainly welcome to share your faith with your sponsored friend and to ask them about their own faith. Asking these kinds of questions in a respectful manner can foster an environment of understanding between various cultures and beliefs.

Hello, thank you for the quick response to my last question. I now have another one! I know that though CFCA is a Catholic organization, it is not your goal to teach the sponsored children about God and try to "convert" them. I have read that some other organization who are not Christian based will not let the sponsors write about religion or God in their letters. Is that the case with CFCA? Obviously, I will try to be respectful in everything I write, I am just hoping that I will be allowed to talk about Jesus with my little girl but I also want to make sure that I will not be breaking any roles or making anyone feel uncomfortable.

Thanks!

Hi Lisa!

Thanks so much for your sponsorship, and welcome to the CFCA community!

It's great that you want to write to your sponsored friend once a month, but there are some practical limitations. It can take 8-10 weeks for your sponsored child to receive your letter, depending on obstacles such as translation time, unreliable mail systems and delivery to remote areas. As a result, your letters may cross in the mail.

One other aspect to keep in mind is that sponsored members are required to write a minimum of two letters per year. They can write more if they choose to, but it's not required.

We now have an option where you can send eLetters to your sponsored friend (in addition to traditional letters sent through the mail). There is a limit, though, of six eLetters per calendar year. That limit may change in the future, but for now it’s capped at six.

We're thrilled that you took the time to write to us. Here are further tips on letter writing: http://www.cfcausa.org/WhySponsor/HowSponsorshipWorks/WritingLetters/LetterWritingTips.aspx

Thanks again!

Hello! I am a brand new sponsor and am looking forward to receiving my sponsor kit so I can write my first letter to our child. My question is, is there such thing as writing to much? I'm thinking that I want to push myself to write at least once every month. Is that overboard? I know the requirement is just once a month but I also know how much I loved receiving mail as a child (and still do!) and I really want to do all I can to really impact our little girl's life. Thanks for any feedback!

Thanks very much for letting us know of CFCA's commitment to respect the beliefs and traditions of people of all faiths. I wasn't sure whether or not this would be your philosophy, but I'm so relieved to hear that it is, as it makes me feel much better about being a sponsor. I know many Christians wish to propagate their faith, but in developing countries, in the past, treating non-Christians with respect wasn't the norm in so many places, and it did much harm, as I'm sure you know. Please be assured that there are sponsors who have deep appreciation for those who humbly serve the poor in the spirit of Christ, without telling them they should abandon the faith of their ancestors.

Kayce, thanks for your question. CFCA was founded by lay Catholics, and our work with people living in poverty is motivated by and based on Catholic social teaching.

Our organization maintains Christian values as its core and as our guiding principles. Our main focus is on serving the poor, and while we will certainly offer the teachings of Christ to those who seek them, we also respect the beliefs and cultural traditions of our sponsored members of all faiths.

Thank you,

Hi Doug,

If you write eLetters in Spanish, it will not be translated by the CFCA project in Chile. We recommend that you’re comfortable with the language first before you write eLetters in Spanish. (For this reason we ask that all sponsors avoid online translation services.)

A good option may be to have a friend who is fluent in Spanish review your eLetter before you send it.

As for diacritical marks, I’ve found the following website helpful for computer shortcuts: http://www.spanishnewyork.com/spanish-characters.html

As a last resort, you can always "copy and paste" the diacritical mark into your eLetter.

Hope this helps! Thanks for the kind words and for writing to your friend.

Am particularly interested in the children's pictures since our sponsored person is a child. Thanks for the quick reply.

Another topic:
I really like and appreciate the eletter facility. If I write in espanol, will that hasten the delivery to our friend in Chile?

And another topic:
When I write in espanol, the isa no ability to use the special diacritical marks used in that language. For example compro ( without the accent on the last o) is first person present tense, the same word with and accent on the last o is third person past tense. Also you will note that espanol is incorrectly spelled for the lack of the tilde over the n. I will continue to write in espanol with the hope your translaters can guess the meaning from context, mainly because I need the practice in the second language.

On the whole, the new facility is really great!

Funny that you should ask! I'm working on a project right now with the CFCA multimedia team to put together some videos of sponsored children playing games in Chile. We're expecting to complete this in January.

I'm also hoping to finish a video slideshow sometime in 2012 that will feature sponsored aging friends in Chile.

If you're interested, I'll make a note to send you those videos once they're complete. Thanks for the question.
