Drying potatoes (chuño) in Bolivia

The wisdom and resourcefulness of the families in our sponsorship program never cease to amaze us!

Dehydrating potatoes (chuños) in Bolivia

Dario places chuño, which are dehydrated Andean potatoes, on the ground to dry them.

In just one example, sponsored friends and their families in Bolivia often use chuño, a ubiquitous form of dehydrated Andean potato, to supplement the volume and caloric value of their diets.

Very few crops do well in the high-altitude, arid conditions of the high Andean plateau. But potatoes are one of the crops still vigorously cultivated generation after generation.

Dario is the widowed father of Cristian and Giovana, who are both sponsored in the CFCA Hope for a Family program.

Dario and his family make their humble home against the expansive, deep-blue backdrop of legendary Lake Titicaca.

Most of the family’s income is seasonal, and they must overcome difficulties to make ends meet. Read more

Blanca and Luis, CFCA sponsored aging couple in Lima, Peru.

Blanca, 76, and Luis, 77, are sponsored through CFCA in Peru.

What is your secret for a long life?

Blanca: To laugh when you can and to cry when you have to.

Luis: Do not complain about life, remain joyful and work hard because when working, you forget about problems.

What advice do you have for young people?

Blanca: Stay away from drugs.

Luis: Keep your mind busy doing activities that you enjoy because a free mind tends to think about bad things. Young people must make an effort to find good company, good friends. Read more

Dear sponsor, I would like to know …

Have you ever wondered what sponsored children like to know about you? Well, wonder no more! We asked five adorable children in Colombia what they would like to know about their sponsors.

Hopefully this helps you in writing your next letter to your sponsored friend!

Marlon

Marlon, CFCA sponsored child in ColombiaMy name is Marlon and I am 9 years old. I have been sponsored for two years.

I have a message for my sponsor: I wish you will do well with everything on your farm. I would like to hear from you soon.

I like it when you tell me about your grandkids. They are 7 and 8 years old.

Where do you live? Do you have wintertime? What do you grow on your farm? Do you have animals?

I would like to get a picture of you again. Thanks for your family picture and the Christmas picture.

When I grow up I would like to be a singer!

My name is Andrea and I am a sponsored child from Bogota, Colombia.

I live with my parents and little brother. I have been sponsored for three years.

I have always had frequent communication with my sponsors, and they sent a picture to me. We also sent a picture of my family and me, so we knew each other through pictures.

When I saw my sponsors for the first time I felt a lot of happiness because I finally met them. I have wanted to meet my sponsors for a long time. Read more

Want to visit your sponsored child or aging friend in Chile?

Do you sponsor a child or aging friend in Chile? Or are you just interested in going to Chile with CFCA? If so, we’d love for you to consider coming on our Sep. 28-Oct. 7 mission awareness trip!

We need a minimum number of travelers to go on this trip in order for it to be cost-effective. If we do not meet this minimum requirement, we unfortunately have to cancel the trip.

(Quick note: A CFCA trip is not a traditional mission trip. You will not be building houses or working in CFCA projects. A mission awareness trip is an in-depth immersion experience that will bring you face to face with the realities of CFCA families. If you also sponsor there, you’ll have an opportunity to meet your sponsored friend.)

So far our trip this year is just one person away from our minimum requirement. A few sponsors who originally signed up have had to cancel because of other time and scheduling conflicts.

The trip cost is $475 per person. Food, lodging and most in-country transportation are included. Airfare is not included.

If you’re interested in going, you can always download a registration packet from our website. Complete one application form per participant, read and sign the code of conduct, and return them along with a non-refundable $100 deposit per person to: CFCA, 1 Elmwood Avenue, Kansas City, KS 66103, Attn: Trip Coordinator.

Other ways to sign up are to call our trip coordinators at 800-875-6564 or email trips@cfcausa.org.

We’d love to know before July 23 whether anyone else is interested in coming. Feel free to share this information with anyone else you know who may be interested.

Thanks so much!

Dancing workshops in Colombia delight sponsored children

CFCA’s Hope for a Family sponsorship program focuses on the holistic development of children. Beyond needs such as health care, education and better nutrition, sponsorship can also provide counseling, art and dancing workshops, and more.

Paola, who teaches Maria featured in the above video, teaches one of the dancing workshops and has also been sponsored since 1996. She shares her story with us:

When I was 9 years old I got sponsored. The ladies at the kindergarten told us about the CFCA program and the benefits that CFCA was bringing to the families, and in this way I got sponsored through the CFCA.

I like sponsorship because we receive many benefits that make possible our social development. Benefits like: psychology, pedagogy, dental care, family counseling, etc.

I always liked the workshops. I think the CFCA helps develop well-rounded people through the workshops about art like handcrafts, dancing and literature.

When I was sponsored we had the chance to choose a workshop to learn, and I chose dancing workshops. Read more
