Celebrating Holy Week in Guatemala

This week, people around the world have been celebrating Holy Week in a variety of ways. The celebrations in Guatemala are particularly colorful and fragrant.

During Holy Week, families in Guatemala make carpets out of natural materials like sawdust, pine needles and flowers to line the streets for Holy Week processions.

Grass-roots approach can change story for India’s girls

India can be a dangerous place to be a girl.

Rape, abuse, dowry customs, child labor and infanticide are part of a tragic legacy in this country that is also full of bright minds and a rich cultural heritage.

The savage gang rape of a young woman unfortunate enough to ride the wrong bus in New Delhi 18 months ago took women’s rights to the streets where thousands marched on the presidential palace.

India’s important national elections being held over the next few weeks will tell us whether the outcry will lead to any significant change.

I hope so. But I have my doubts.

Guatemalan teen dreams of making school library favorite place for kids

National Library Week in the U.S. is April 13-19. People across the country are celebrating by visiting libraries, participating in events and sharing how libraries have changed their lives.
To join in the celebration, we would like to share the story of Claudia, a sponsored teen from Guatemala. Claudia volunteers at a local school library and works with the children there to help them become more engaged in reading.

Bill and Becky Costas have been sponsors since 1996. Becky works as a sign language interpreter, and in honor of Deaf Awareness Day, we would like to share her reflections on being a sponsor and participating in awareness trips.

God had a plan when he gave me a heart for the deaf and the skills to work as a sign language interpreter.

On an awareness trip to the Philippines in 2006 to meet our sponsored child who was soon graduating from college, my husband, Bill, and I met a group of deaf students.

We were waiting for a Mass to begin when I noticed movement to my right. When I turned, I saw a group of deaf students signing in American Sign Language.
