July 4 usually means fireworks, outdoor grilling and paying tribute to our blessed country.

Today is Independence Day in the United States!

The holiday is a time to reflect on Americans’ liberties and the beauty and promise of this blessed country.

CFCA’s Kansas City headquarters will be closed in observance of the July 4 holiday.

CFCA is thankful for our U.S. homeland, where our community of compassion was established, and for her people, who have been joyful givers and accepted our invitation to walk in solidarity with children and aging friends living in poverty around the world.

The July 4 holiday reminds us how privileged we are to live in a country founded on equality and freedom.

Feb. 27: Dominican Republic gained its independence from Haiti.

May 24: Ecuador gained its independence from Spain.

June 26: Madagascar gained its independence from France.

July 4: The United States of America gained its independence from England.

July 5: Venezuela gained its independence from Spain.

July 20: Colombia gained its independence from Spain.

July 28: Peru gained its independence from Spain.

Aug. 6: Bolivia gained its independence from Spain.

Aug. 15: India gained its independence from England.

Sept. 7: Brazil gained its independence from Portugal.

Sept. 15: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua all gained independence from Spain.

Sept. 16: Mexico gained its independence from Spain.

Sept. 18: Chile gained its independence from Spain.

Oct. 9: Uganda gained its independence from England.

Dec. 9: Tanzania gained its independence from England.

Dec. 12: Kenya gained its independence from England.
