CFCA’s partnership with Cristo Rey Kansas City

Every day we see how education is key to breaking the cycle of poverty worldwide.

We also see the importance of education much closer to home ó that is, right here in our Kansas City headquarters.

For six years since the inception of Cristo Rey, our CFCA office has had a local partnership with Cristo Rey Kansas City High School, one of 25 innovative high schools in the Cristo Rey Network. These schools serve culturally diverse students with economic need.

A Jesuit priest, the Rev. John P. Foley, began the first Cristo Rey high school in 1996. He had just returned to Chicago after working in missions in Peru for 34 years.

Our mission of solidarity with those living in poverty complements the Catholic high school’s mission, detailed on its website: “Cristo Rey Kansas City is shaped and energized by the educational vision of the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth in the Vincentian spirit of service to the poor and partnership with those of means.”

Through the school’s innovative work-study program, Cristo Rey students work five days a month at a professional company or organization.

“Cristo Rey students perform vital, entry-level work at CFCA,” said Marcia Willman, director of child services at CFCA. “In turn, they learn to maneuver in the business world and earn a large portion of the cost of their private, Catholic education.”

Some students help process mail, photos and family records of sponsored children in our child services department.

Others learn business and accounting skills in our finance department, while others have helped out our communications department with various assignments.

Recently we thanked this year’s Cristo Rey interns for their last week of service with us before the summer holidays. The interns for this school year were:

  • Freshman: Schuyler Gilchrist ó 1 year of service
  • Sophomore: Mikayla Hernandez ó 1 year of service
  • Junior: Magali Guzm·n ó 2 years of service
  • Seniors: Laura Soto and Roger Resendiz ó 3 years of service

Congratulations to all these students. We wish them all the best in their future endeavors!
