Natural home remedies for winter, flu season: India

In our ongoing series about natural home remedies used by sponsored friends and their families, we look to India.

Milk with pepper or pepper powder is a natural home remedy in India

Warm milk with pepper or pepper powder is used in India to relieve sore throats and coughs.

The winter season is from November to March in almost all Indian states. The days are cold with average temperature ranging from 50-64 degrees Fahrenheit (10-18 degrees Celsius), but it can drop down to below 32 degrees (0 degrees Celsius) in some higher ranges of northern India.

Here are three common Indian home remedies used during the winter and flu seasons.

If you do decide to try a natural home remedy, please check with your doctor first. Certain home remedies, particularly herbal ones, can interact with prescription medications.

Stuffy noses, colds

This remedy reminded us of Vicks! A common vapor therapy used in India is to add a teaspoon of turmeric powder to a bowl of hot water. The patient’s head is covered with a towel or blanket. The patient then inhales the vapor to get relief within 5-10 minutes.

Sore throats, coughing

A glass of warm milk with pepper or pepper powder is drunk before going to bed. Ginger tea is another common option.

Here’s a recipe for ginger tea: Mix 1 cup milk, Ω cup water, 1 spoon of powdered tea leaves, 1 spoon of sugar, and 1 tablespoon of fresh ginger juice. Boil the tea, strain it, and drink.

Skin care

Skin can get dry and itchy during cold weather. People in India often apply plain butter or cream on the exposed skin and let it absorb for half an hour. Then they wash it off with warm water.

Another method is to apply coconut oil before a bath, using a scrub made of gram flour (cereal flour made from ground chickpeas) and a pinch of turmeric. It is said to improve the complexion, too!

  1. I like to use coconut oil to moisturize my skin as well as boost my immune system for the winter months. If you consume coconut oil daily it will work wonders on your overall well-being. Coconut oil is a tropical oil also known as “a miracle food”.
